I grew up in a home filled with classical music. I began piano lessons at age 6 at Eastman Preparatory Department (now ECMS) and continued studying piano through my college years. I started flute lessons in 4th grade and played flute in the Brighton High School Orchestra. I was a music major at Vassar, where I earned a BA degree, followed by a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Harvard. I taught music in Bedford, MA and at Allen Creek School in Pittsford.

I married hometown sweetheart Charles Kaplan in 1966. We have two sons and four grandchildren. When we moved to our empty-nester home in 2001, I was fortunate to meet a new neighbor who was one of the original members of Rochester New Horizons Band. He convinced me to dust off my flute and actually drove me to my first band rehearsal. I have enjoyed playing in the symphonic band ever since, the orchestra for almost as long, the flute choir, and most recently, a woodwind quintet.

One added bonus of my New Horizons experience was the joy of playing in the NHO with my father, who played in the viola section for several years until his death at the age of 93.
