| I was fortunate to grow up in a home filled with music. My father was a dedicated early audiophile. He loved his wide variety of jazz, swing, Broadway, classical and opera records that always seemed to be playing. So although I became a big fan of the folk music and rock 'n roll so popular when we were young, through osmosis I also developed an appreciation of just about every music genre (for which I am always grateful).
When my school (Kenmore-Tonawanda District) first offered the opportunity to learn an instrument in the 4th grade, I jumped at the chance. Why I chose the trumpet I can't say- probably because I liked the sound, and it was LOUD . Anyway, in addition to sports it quickly became one of my favorite things. I benefitted from the patient guidance of wonderful music teachers, and I loved playing in the concert band, dance band, and our school musical pit orchestras.
Alas, following high school my music career was pretty much interrupted by serving in the US Navy, college, a business career, and raising two wonderful kids. Other than a brief opportunity to play in Navy "boot camp," and at my kids' wedding ceremonies, my horn sat in a corner. But I would often look at it, wishing to find a reason to pick it up and a group to play with. So my discovery of New Horizons, and the warm welcome everyone has extended to me, is like having a dream come true.
These days my wife and I enjoy many activities, including home projects, traveling, snow skiing, and spending as much time as possible with our kids and grandkids. And now that I have a reason to again play my instrument, I look forward to enjoying the many rehearsals and concerts to come.
